Students will become field ecologists, investigating a real ecosystem and collecting the data required for the Interactions of Life section of the new Leaving Certificate Biology course.
During the study they will:
Explore a habitat and identify the plants and animals that live there.
Use scientific fieldwork equipment including quadrats, sweep nets, pooters and identification keys.
Collect real ecological data using both qualitative and quantitative survey techniques.
Measure environmental factors such as temperature, light, soil conditions, wind speed, water quality and slope.
Investigate biodiversity and examine how species are distributed within a habitat.
Discover ecological relationships including feeding interactions, competition, predation and symbiosis.
Analyse their findings to determine how abiotic factors influence the abundance and distribution of species.
Build a habitat profile using the primary data they have gathered in the field.
