Students will become field ecologists, investigating a real ecosystem and collecting the data required for the Interactions of Life section of the new Leaving Certificate Biology course.
During the study they will:
Explore a habitat and identify the plants and animals that live there through hands-on biology fieldwork.
Use scientific fieldwork equipment including quadrats, sweep nets, pooters and identification keys.
Collect real ecological data using both qualitative and quantitative survey techniques as part of an engaging outdoor curriculum experience.
Measure environmental factors such as temperature, light, soil conditions, wind speed, water quality and slope.
Investigate biodiversity and examine how species are distributed within a habitat.
Discover ecological relationships including feeding interactions, competition, predation and symbiosis.
Analyse their findings to determine how abiotic factors influence the abundance and distribution of species.
Build a habitat profile using the primary data gathered through practical outdoor classroom learning activities in the field.
The experience allows students to apply their classroom knowledge through practical investigation, helping them understand how the Interactions of Life concepts can be observed and investigated within a real ecosystem.
What Students Experience
A Branch Out Biology field study gives students the opportunity to take their learning beyond the classroom and investigate a real ecosystem first-hand.
Students work as field ecologists, observing habitats, identifying species, collecting primary data and using scientific techniques to investigate the relationships between organisms and their environment. They work with real fieldwork equipment and develop practical skills in observation, measurement, data collection and analysis.
