Keeping Students Engaged During Field Studies: Practical Tips That Really Work

Ask any teacher what makes a field study successful, and you'll probably hear answers like good weather, careful planning, or interesting activities.

All of those matter.

But after leading hundreds of field studies, we've found that one thing makes the biggest difference:

Students need to feel involved.

When every student has a purpose, they stay engaged. They ask more questions, contribute more ideas and, perhaps most importantly, they enjoy the experience.

Here are some of the strategies we've found work time and time again.



1. Give Every Student a Role

One of the biggest mistakes we see is allowing one confident student to take over while everyone else watches.

Instead, make sure every student has a meaningful role within their group. These don't have to be complicated, but they do need to give each student ownership of the task.

Some examples include:

  • Data Recorder – Records measurements and observations accurately.

  • Equipment Operator(s) – Uses the measuring equipment. Depending on the investigation, this role can be split into several jobs, such as holding the measuring tape, using the stop watch, reading the metre stick or positioning the quadrat.

  • Photographer – Takes photographs of the investigation, equipment setup and key features to support later analysis and reporting.

  • Quality Checker – Watches for problems, checks that measurements are being taken correctly and reminds the group if something has been missed. An important part of evaluation.

  • Team Leader – Coordinates the task, keeps everyone working together and ensures each member has completed their role.

One important lesson we've learned is that students need support with these roles at the beginning. It's unfair to simply hand them a job and expect them to know exactly what to do.

Take a few minutes to demonstrate each role, explain why it's important and guide students through the first investigation. Once they understand what's expected, you'll often find they become far more independent as the day goes on.

We've also noticed that students who are quieter in the classroom often flourish outdoors when they're trusted with responsibility.

Rotate the roles throughout the day so every student gets the opportunity to experience different aspects of fieldwork. Not only does this keep everyone engaged, but it also helps students appreciate how each role contributes to the success of the investigation.



2. Break Big Tasks into Smaller Ones

A river investigation can seem overwhelming if students are simply told to "measure the river."

Instead, break the task into manageable steps.

Cross-Sectional Area

Mark the width of the river channel.

Measure the width.

Then the depth.

Then record observations.

Each success builds confidence for the next challenge.

Small achievements keep motivation high throughout the investigation.



3. Don't Be Afraid to Duplicate Equipment

If you've ever watched ten students standing around waiting for one clipboard or one calliper, you'll know how quickly enthusiasm disappears.

Whenever possible, we duplicate equipment and run the same investigation side by side.

Instead of one large group waiting for their turn, two smaller groups can work simultaneously.

Students stay active, everyone gets hands-on experience, and there's far less waiting around.

Sometimes it's the simplest changes that make the biggest difference.



4. More Eyes Mean Better Learning

Fieldwork is very different from teaching in a classroom.

Students naturally spread out as they investigate, and your attention is often divided between helping one group while keeping an eye on everyone else.

If you have another adult with you; a teaching colleague, SNA, parent volunteer, or another member of staff, it can make a huge difference.

When schools visit us, the class teacher often works alongside us rather than standing back. While we lead the activities, teachers circulate between groups, encourage discussions, check understanding and support students who may need a little extra guidance.

It's not just about safety or supervision.

It's about creating more learning opportunities.



5. Let Students Think Before You Answer

One of the hardest things to do as an educator is... not answer the question!

When students ask us, "Is this right?" our first instinct is often to tell them.

Instead, try asking another question.

  • "What do you think?"

  • "What evidence have you found?"

  • "How could you test that idea?"

  • "Does your data support that conclusion?"

Field studies are fantastic opportunities for students to become investigators rather than simply following instructions.

Sometimes they'll make mistakes.

That's okay.

In fact, some of the best discussions begin with results that nobody expected.



6. Celebrate Curiosity

Not every question has an immediate answer.

Some of our favourite moments happen when a student notices something we hadn't planned to discuss.

Maybe it's an unusual insect.

A strangely shaped rock.

A patch of erosion.

A bird overhead.

Rather than rushing on to the next activity, pause and explore their curiosity.

Those unexpected conversations are often the moments students remember years later.



7. Keep the Energy Up

Outdoor learning is active, and students use far more energy than many people realise.

One thing we've noticed over the years is that keeping to students' usual school routine makes a real difference. If your class normally has a small break at 11.00 a.m., you'll often find that's exactly when concentration starts to dip during a field study too.

The same applies to lunch.

Rather than pushing on because "we're nearly finished," stop for a proper break. Giving students time to eat, drink and recharge helps them return to the investigation with renewed focus and enthusiasm.

Comfort matters too.

Students who are cold, wet or hungry find it much harder to concentrate, solve problems and enjoy the experience. That's why preparing students before the trip, bringing suitable clothing, waterproofs, spare layers, drinks and snacks, is every bit as important as planning the investigation itself.

Sometimes the biggest improvement you can make to a field study is simply making sure everyone is warm, dry and well fed.

Plan your field study timetable around the students, not just the investigation. A well-timed snack break often does more for engagement than trying to squeeze in one more activity before lunch!



8. Praise the Process, Not Just the Answer

Fieldwork isn't about getting everything right.

It's about asking good questions, collecting reliable evidence and thinking critically.

Celebrate students who:

  • Work well as a team

  • Show initiative

  • Ask thoughtful questions

  • Help others

  • Solve problems

  • Persevere when something doesn't go to plan

These are the skills that make great field scientists and great learners.



9. Remember Why You're There

It's easy to become focused on completing every worksheet or collecting every piece of data.

But don't forget to pause.

Look around.

Ask students what they've noticed.

Encourage them to appreciate the landscape they're exploring.

Sometimes the most valuable learning isn't written on a worksheet at all.

It's the confidence students gain from working together, solving problems, thinking independently, and discovering something for themselves.



Final Thoughts

The best field studies aren't the ones where everything runs perfectly.

They're the ones where students leave talking about what they discovered.

By giving every student a meaningful role, encouraging curiosity and creating opportunities for genuine investigation, you transform fieldwork from an activity into an experience.

After leading hundreds of field studies, we've learned that engagement doesn't happen by accident. It's created through thoughtful planning, clear roles, good organisation and the confidence to let students explore, question and sometimes even make mistakes.

Because when students feel like they're part of the investigation, not just watching it, they don't just remember the lesson.

They remember the adventure.
